Venezuelans Race Against Time as Quake Death Toll Climbs to 1,719

Jarida Report

Rescue teams and volunteers in Venezuela continued searching through collapsed buildings on Tuesday as hopes of finding survivors faded following last week’s devastating twin earthquakes.

Authorities said the death toll has risen to at least 1,719, with 5,034 people injured, after the powerful earthquakes struck the northern state of La Guaira on Wednesday. Tens of thousands of people remain missing or unaccounted for, heightening concerns over a prolonged humanitarian crisis.

Although the critical 72-hour rescue window expired on Saturday, search operations continue in heavily damaged neighbourhoods, where families are still waiting for news of missing loved ones.

“We have to stay strong, even without food, without sleep,” Ana Rada said as civil defence workers searched for her brother. “Until I see the body, I still have hope.”
