Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday said the provincial government aims to operate 5,000 electric buses over the next five years, as part of efforts to expand and modernise public transport.
Speaking during a meeting of the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department in Lahore, she said the province has also begun assembling electric buses locally, according to Radio Pakistan.
In the first phase of the project, 1,500 electric buses will be introduced across 91 tehsils in Punjab.
Maryam said 189 new buses are ready to be launched, while another 488 electric buses are expected to arrive from China later this month.
The announcement follows the provincial government’s plans unveiled in April to expand public transport by leasing additional buses, including an initial rollout of 1,000 non-air-conditioned buses to help meet growing demand.
