Girlhood vs Womanhood

Mnika Kafait

Wait! Before you step outside,

Learn to take firm steps,

A little bit left, a little bit right.

You are not a girl anymore,

Learn to be,

Elegant, not cute anymore.

To be,

Gentle, not loud anymore.

Learn to be,

Sweet, not overly sweet…

Learn to be this,

Learn to be that!
We like the smile,

But you can’t laugh like that!

We like to see you shine,

But don’t rush too fast.

But I was like this…

But I love to do that…

But this is who I am…

Hush, little lady,

Just ifs, no buts anymore.

You aren’t the same anymore,

You slept last night.

You grew some more…

Some more, just to sugarcoat.

Learn to be a lady,

Wear your quiet coats.

Leave the buts.

Add ‘ifs’ to life.

Think before you even twitch your eye.

You are a pretty, gorgeous little delight.

Change! But don’t lose your light.

Be more productive, with no fright.

Be calmer, with no signs of blight.

Grow more, but be yourself in hindsight.

I am Mnika Kafait, an artist and a learner who believes that every moment has something to teach, and I show up with my notebook ready. My work moves fluidly between poetry and prose, marked by carefully rendered imagery that carries emotional depth. Through my writing, I often explore what is fragile, unspoken, enduring, and often misunderstood. I also sometimes give my writings a sharper turn that highlights the absurdities of life.
