Valentine’s Day: Celebrated Contrary to Its True Spirit?

Rev. Javed Yousaf

Understanding the Origins and Meaning

Valentine’s Day, observed annually on February 14, has become a global celebration associated with love, flowers, chocolates, and romantic gestures. Over time, however, many believe that the day has gradually shifted from its historical and spiritual origins toward a largely commercial event. Historically, Saint Valentine is remembered as a Christian martyr. According to tradition, he lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in Rome. It is said that he performed marriage ceremonies in secret, believing in the sanctity of love and marriage. For this, he was imprisoned and eventually executed. His story became symbolic of commitment, faith, and sacrifice. Over centuries, the day evolved into a cultural celebration of love and affection across many parts of the world.

From Sacred Commemoration to Commercial Celebration

In modern times, Valentine’s Day is often marked by gift exchanges, greeting cards, dining events, and public expressions of affection. Businesses heavily promote the day, and in many societies, the celebration has taken on a predominantly romantic and commercial character. Some communities question whether the current form of celebration reflects the original spirit of faith, sacrifice, and devotion associated with Saint Valentine. Critics argue that excessive commercialization may overshadow deeper values such as commitment, family integrity, and moral responsibility.
