Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thrown his weight behind Donald Trump’s new Gaza plan, a move aimed at easing international pressure and resetting ties abroad while shoring up his faltering domestic base. The plan, which demands Hamas release hostages and surrender weapons in exchange for easing Israel’s siege, asks little of Israel but risks backlash within Netanyahu’s ultra-nationalist coalition, many of whom reject any mention of Palestinian statehood.
Supporters see it as a tactical “checkmate” that could secure hostages’ release, revive regional diplomacy, and strengthen Netanyahu ahead of the 2026 elections — if his right-wing partners don’t rebel first.
