India Joins Debate on South Korea’s Webtoon Ad Controversy

Jarida Report

The South Korean crackdown on violent and sexually explicit webtoon advertisements is the
bone of contention among the Indian digital rights activists who cried foul over the issue of
international concern.

These advertisements, which frequently appear on popular websites
that can be accessed by minors, have caused panic among parents and teachers in India,
where webcomics are becoming increasingly popular. The advocacy groups claim that India
does not have strong filters to filter out harmful digital content and are pressuring the IT
Ministry to intervene.

In Seoul, the Korean Communications Standards Commission
declared strict supervision this week. Indian campaigners believe that such a regulation is
urgently needed before the proliferation of explicit content at home becomes uncontrollable.
