Egyptian president grants pardon to Abdel Fattah

The prominent British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah has been granted freedom this Tuesday. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a pardon that led to the activist being released from prison in Cairo. Abdel Fattah, 43, being a leading figure in Egypt’s 2011 uprising and an outspoken advocate for criticising the country’s authorities had been jailed for almost the entire past decade.

Social media posts by his family members early on Tuesday showed Abdel Fattah enjoying an emotional reunion with his loved ones following his release.
