Turkey’s Özgür Özel Re-Elected CHP Leader Amid Legal Uncertainty

Jarida Report

The Republican People’s Party (CHP), Turkey’s main opposition party, re-elected Özgür Özel as chairman at an extraordinary congress on Sunday. This strengthened his power before a court decision that is about to come down. The case could void the party’s 2023 congress because of alleged problems, which could lead to new elections for party leaders.

Özel got much support from delegates, reflecting his popularity in the CHP after leading the party to victory in last year’s local elections. His re-election makes him a major opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling AKP in the run-up to national elections.
