Two Bodies Recovered in Grasberg Mine Tragedy, Five Still Missing

Freeport Indiana mine rescuers found a mudflow buried two bodies in the search of seven workers trapped after the underground Block Cave had been struck by mudflow in the underground mine on September 8.

The victims were confirmed to be Indonesian nationals but are yet to be formally identified. Five miners (among them workers of Indonesia, Chile, South Africa) are still missing, as rescue teams continue to work in dangerous circumstances.

The main production block of the mine is shut down, although minor locations continue to operate. Grasberg mine in Papua, which is also one of the largest producers of copper and gold in the world, has been subjected to questioning regarding safety practices, with the most recent tragedy resulting into increased calls of stricter regulation.
