South Korea’s Top Diplomat to Visit Beijing Amid Uncertainty Over Xi’s APEC Attendance

Jarida Report

The Foreign Minister Cho Hyun of South Korea will visit China this week, visiting Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister. It is his first official trip to China since he came into office in June. The talks would be centered on security in the region, trade relations and potential Chinese President Xi Jinping attendance at the APEC summit in South Korea in the latter half of the year.

The visit of Cho highlights the attempts of Korea to strike a balance between connections with Beijing and ensure close relations with Washington and Tokyo. Analysts indicate that the visit has appeared at a sensitive time, as the ever-increasing U.S. -China rivalry continues to dominate the diplomatic life within the Indo-Pacific.
