On Monday, Nepal lifted a pervasive social media block that was enforced amid anti-corruption protests in the country last week, though the capital remains shaken. Protesters once again crowded the streets in Kathmandu despite the indefinite curfew. They demanded that the government of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli take accountability for the 19 people killed in the violence with the security forces.
The Facebook, X, and TikTok ban, which had limited access to the platforms, was focused on easing the situation, but protesters claim that the measure is not doing much to defuse anger about graft and brutal
policing. India has called for restraint, with rights groups threatening that Nepal is about to fall into even greater political turmoil unless dialogue takes over repression.
