South Korean Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol

Jarida Report

A South Korean court has issued a fresh arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, just months after his impeachment and removal from office. Authorities believe Yoon may try to destroy evidence tied to his alleged attempt to declare martial law in December 2024.

Yoon, who had been briefly released in March, was taken back into custody on July 9. Prosecutors are pursuing serious charges, including abuse of power, obstruction of official duties, and misusing state security forces to prevent his previous arrest. If formally indicted and convicted, he could face life in prison—or even the death penalty under South Korean law.

This is Yoon’s second time being detained since his impeachment. His legal team claims the charges are politically driven, but the courts have decided there’s enough risk and evidence to keep him behind bars while investigations continue.
