A Karachi additional sessions court has found filmmaker Jamshed Mahmood Raza, known as Jami, guilty under Section 500 of the Pakistan Penal Code for criminal defamation. The charges stem from a 2019 incident where Jami publicly read and later posted on Facebook an anonymous letter from a sexual assault survivor. Though the letter didn’t name anyone, it contained distinctive details—such as the accused being a veteran music video and TVC director who brought his young adult son to events—which led many to suspect Sohail Javed. Despite mounting speculation, Jami neither halted the surge of allegations nor clarified the subject’s identity, the court noted .
The court criticised Jami for failing to provide solid evidence—such as the letter’s author, communications with festival organisers, or any material indicating his ignorance of the letter’s implications. It highlighted that deleting the post after backlash did little to mitigate the damage.Consequently, Jami received a two‑year prison sentence and a ₹10,000 fine. He’s now been sent to Karachi Central Jail to serve the term.
