US Exempts Smartphones and Computers from Global Trump Tariffs

Jarida Report

On April 12, 2025, the Trump administration announced that smartphones, computers, and other electronics would be exempt from the newly imposed “reciprocal” tariffs. This decision aims to reduce the potential cost impact on American consumers for popular high-tech products. The exemptions, published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, cover various electronic goods, including smartphones and components entering the United States from China, which were previously subject to an additional 145% tariff. Semiconductors are also excluded from the standard 10% tariff applied to most U.S. trading partners, as well as the added 125% levy on China.

These tariff exemptions are a response to concerns that the initial tariffs would lead to increased prices for consumers, especially for products predominantly manufactured in China. Major tech companies, including Apple, Nvidia, Dell, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, stand to benefit significantly from this policy change.

However, while the exemptions provide immediate relief, they may not substantially alter the long-term dynamics of U.S.-China trade relations or the broader objectives of the tariff strategy.
