In a country with a deregulation policy, promising unrestricted trade Punjab’s unannounced ban which prohibits the interprovincial movement of wheat has sparked a catastrophe. This move has been condemned by politicians and flour millers as “violating constitutional rights”. Punjab officials refuse to acknowledge that a formal ban has been established. However, according to them certain checkpoints are present which track “unusual” wheat movement.
This “unofficial” ban has alienated provinces during a time of crisis, when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, which heavily depend on Punjab’s wheat supply as their staple food are deprived.
