UN Warns U.S. Aid Cuts Could Push Millions of Afghans to the Brink of Famine”

Jarida Report

The United Nations has issued a stark warning that recent U.S. aid cuts are exacerbating Afghanistan’s already dire humanitarian crisis, pushing millions toward famine. The World Food Programme (WFP) reports that due to a 40% global funding shortfall and specific U.S. reductions, it can now only assist about 8 million Afghans this year—and even then, only with half the standard food rations .

Currently, approximately 3.1 million Afghans are on the brink of famine, with a third of the 45 million population requiring food assistance. The WFP’s acting country director, Mutinta Chimuka, emphasized that without additional funding, the agency might have to cease support in some communities, leaving vulnerable populations without essential aid .

The U.S., historically the largest donor to the WFP, has recently frozen foreign aid, including emergency food assistance to 14 countries. While aid was reinstated for six nations, Afghanistan remains excluded, primarily due to concerns over the Taliban’s governance. This decision has drawn criticism from humanitarian organizations, highlighting the severe impact on Afghan civilians .

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has called on international donors to maintain support, warning that reduced aid could lead to increased migration and regional instability. UN officials stress the importance of addressing immediate humanitarian needs while also investing in long-term resilience and stability for Afghanistan .
