U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States may abandon its efforts to mediate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine within days if no substantial progress is made. This statement reflects growing frustration within the White House over Russia’s perceived intransigence, despite some positive developments in recent U.S.-Ukrainian discussions .
Rubio’s comments came after high-level talks in Paris involving European and Ukrainian leaders, where he presented a U.S. peace framework that received a cautiously positive response. President Trump has pledged to end the war, pressuring both sides to negotiate, with warnings of increased sanctions or withdrawal of U.S. support. Despite a partial ceasefire reached earlier in Saudi Arabia-backed negotiations, hostilities have continued. Russia insists Ukraine must renounce NATO membership and cede occupied regions, demands Kyiv sees as unacceptable. Rubio noted that European sanctions would need lifting for a peace deal and acknowledged challenges in finalizing U.S. security guarantees .
Meanwhile, the war has continued, including a recent Russian missile attack that hit Sumy in northeastern Ukraine, killing 35 people—an attack Trump called a “mistake” .
