The political landscape in Turkey has been put in the limbo after a court considers whether to nullify the 2023 congress of the Republican People Party (CHP) which could displace its current leader, Ozgur Ozel. The case, which many regard as politically charged, comes at a time when the CHP has been the greatest threat to the long-serving rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Ozel, who succeeded Kemal Kilicdaroglu last year, has attempted to bring the opposition voices together following the 2023 elections. Opponents believe that the court process endangers democratic standards, and supporters of the government think that there are procedural anomalies that warrant investigation. A decision in favor of Ozel might further heighten the political crisis in Turkey and diminish the opposition before the next elections.
