ISLAMABAD, Sept 13 — Officials confirmed at least 12 Pakistani soldiers were killed early on Saturday when militants of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ambushed an army convoy in the Upper South Waziristan. The attack took place in the neighbourhood of Faqir Sarai area, approximately at 4.00 AM when the assailants fired on both sides with heavy weapons.
The security sources also reported seizure of weapons of several soldiers during the attack. The TTP subsequently took responsibility. The attack is one of the bloodiest attacks on the security forces in recent months, and it has underscored the violence in the tribal belt of Pakistan despite the current counterterrorism campaigns. Police have set out on a hunt to locate the attackers in the rugged area.
