The Syrian Defense Ministry has declared the completion of military operations against loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, following intense clashes in the coastal region of Latakia. These confrontations, among the deadliest since Assad’s overthrow three months ago, resulted in over 1,000 fatalities, predominantly civilians.
The recent violence erupted when Alawite gunmen loyal to Assad attacked a police patrol, leading to widespread clashes and civilian casualties. The Defense Ministry has assured that efforts to locate and neutralize any remaining loyalist elements will continue.
In response to reports of retaliatory attacks and prisoner mistreatment, interim President Ahmad Al-Sharaa announced the formation of an independent committee to investigate these incidents. The unrest has also prompted thousands to flee to neighboring Lebanon, with the UN reporting significant refugee arrivals.
The interim government, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is now focused on restoring stability and unifying the country amidst these challenges.
