Opposition parties in Sindh, including the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), have expressed strong opposition to the federal government’s plan to construct six new canals on the Indus River. They argue that this project could significantly reduce the water supply to Karachi, which relies on the Indus for 85% of its water needs. Sardar Abdul Rahim of the GDA warned that diverting water upstream would make it “impossible” to supply the city. The Sindh Assembly has also unanimously passed a resolution demanding an immediate halt to the canal construction, citing concerns over the impact on the province’s agriculture and water resources.
