Jinnah’s connection to France was primarily established due to his wife’s roots in Paris, where her aunt used to live. In fact, Ruttie’s family name “Petit” was derived from the fact that when her great grandfather, a short man, used to work at a shipping port, the French merchants who he had dealings with nicknamed him “Le Petit Parsi” — thereafter the name “Petit” was integrated into her family name, which is how her father came to be known as Sir Dinshaw Petit.
