Muhammad Ali Jinnah vs The Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) – certainly a very interesting comparison from a fashion point of view! Notice the hats, the turn-up cuff trousers and the shoes.
It is worthwhile to note that both men had a penchant for smart two-toned shoes (also known as ‘Spectator Shoes’). These shoes were originally designed for cricket and golf players, and as the audience would watch the games, they developed a desire to have two-tone shoes for themselves, just as the players would wear. They gained enormous popularity in the 1920s and were labelled as Spectator shoes because it sounded better (given that they were desired by the ‘spectators’ of the games) rather than a name such as ‘Cricketer shoes’. It is also worthwhile to note that Jinnah himself was apparently a fan of cricket – often playing the game with his friends during his childhood.
