PTI leader and former Imran Khan aide, Zulfi Bukhari, will testify before the US Congress’ Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission on July 15. The hearing will focus on what Bukhari calls growing political repression in Pakistan.
He plans to highlight the detention of Imran Khan and his wife, clampdowns on opposition leaders, press freedom issues, and the state of democracy. The commission also linked the crackdown to Khan’s 2022 ousting and the controversial 2024 elections, which the US criticized for lacking fairness.
Other speakers at the hearing include Amnesty International and international rights lawyers. The goal is to assess the situation and propose US policy recommendations.
