Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz had left for the US, in order to attend a meeting of “select” Muslim leaders with US President Donald Trump in the coming week on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Keeping in mind that PM Shehbaz has never directly interacted with the US president before, and this meeting will be the first time.
Earlier, Donald Trump had me the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir which was a worrying historical development as no US President has ever hosted Pakistan’s army chief at the White House unaccompanied by senior civilian officials ever. “The prime minister will also participate in a meeting of select Islamic leaders with US President Trump to exchange views on issues pertaining to regional and international peace and security,” a statement issued by the FO said.
