Initially absent from the list of invited Global South leaders, Modi announced on Friday that he had received an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This development follows a period of strained India-Canada relations, particularly after the 2023 assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, which led to mutual diplomatic expulsions and allegations of foreign interference. The invitation is perceived as a step towards mending bilateral ties.
