Pakistan Urges UN to Reform Its Counter‑Terrorism Structure

Pakistan has called on the United Nations to reform its counter-terrorism framework, urging a greater focus on addressing root causes like poverty, injustice, unresolved conflicts, political marginalization, and foreign occupation. Speaking at UN General Assembly meetings, Pakistan’s diplomats emphasized that without tackling these underlying issues, current efforts merely address symptoms  .

Officials supported establishing a dedicated UN Counter-Terrorism Office with a senior leadership role, but stressed that any new body must uphold state sovereignty and non-interference (). They also pressed for robust global cooperation, enhanced sanctions regimes, and sufficient funding for the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and Ombudsperson’s mechanisms  . Additionally, Pakistan called for tighter controls on emerging technologies—including crypto and AI—to prevent misuse by extremist groups  .
