Pakistan Targets Rs 14 Trillion in Tax Crackdown to Stabilize Economy

On September 10, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered the administration to roll out a massive crackdown on tax evasion, highlighting the struggle by the government to attain hard IMF standards. During a conference with Federal Board of Revenue officials, he instructed professional auditing and involvement of the private sector to seal revenue loopholes.

Pakistan has set a record tax collection objective of Rs 14.13 trillion in FY 2025-26, about 9 per cent above the previous year’s objective. Sharif also stressed the development of a business-friendly environment and rewarding other compliant taxpayers. According to officials, the campaign is vital to the growth of the tax base, strengthening the finances of the populace, and lessening its reliance on foreign borrowing.
