On April 3, 2025, two separate migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals. Off the coast of Greece, an inflatable boat carrying approximately 30 migrants capsized near the island of Lesbos. The Greek coast guard rescued 23 survivors and recovered seven bodies, including those of four women, a boy, and a girl.Â
In a separate incident off the western coast of Turkey, a migrant boat began sinking near the Ayvacik district. Turkish authorities reported that nine migrants died, 25 were rescued, and one individual remained missing as search operations continued.Â
These tragedies highlight the ongoing risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe. According to the UN refugee agency, nearly 9,000 people have entered Greece since the start of the year, most via sea routes. In 2024, over 54,000 entries were recorded, underscoring the persistent challenges and dangers associated with these journeys.Â
