London Braces for Tense Showdown Between Rival Protests

Jarida Report

The London police have posted over 1600 officers, including 500 not based in the capital, in advance of the rival demonstrations scheduled on September 13. A right-wing organization, Unite the Kingdom, headed by Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (or Tommy Robinson), intends to organize a large-scale march against immigrants and Muslim communities.

Likewise, Stand Up To Racism has staged a counter-protest in response, and there is concern of confrontations. Governments have put up perimeter walls and drawn borders to keep the groups separate, and violence will not be acceptable. The protests occur against the backdrop of an escalating level of tension in Europe regarding the migration debate, with London being a focal point of a larger conflict between the anti-racist and nationalist movements
