IndiGo to End Turkish Airlines Lease Amid Geopolitical Strains

Jarida Report

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, will terminate its leasing agreement with Turkish Airlines by August 31, 2025, following a final three-month extension granted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The decision comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions, notably Turkey’s support for Pakistan during a recent conflict, which has led to public backlash in India and calls for boycotts of Turkish products.

The lease, initiated in 2023, involved two Turkish Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft, complete with pilots and some crew, operating on IndiGo’s Delhi-Istanbul and Mumbai-Istanbul routes. IndiGo had requested a six-month extension, but the DGCA approved only three months, citing passenger convenience. The airline has committed not to seek further extensions.

Air India, IndiGo’s rival, has opposed the agreement, arguing it poses business and security risks and disproportionately benefits Turkey. The Indian government recently revoked the security clearance of Turkish ground handling firm Celebi, further straining aviation ties.

IndiGo has defended its partnership with Turkish Airlines, highlighting benefits for Indian travelers and contributions to aviation growth. With the lease ending, IndiGo may revert to narrow-body aircraft or utilize wide-body planes leased from Norse Atlantic Airways, pending the delivery of its own Airbus A350 and A321XLR aircraft.
