HRCP Criticizes LHCBA’s Call to Restrict Ahmadis from Eid Observances

Jarida Report

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed deep concern over a letter issued by the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) urging the Punjab police to prevent members of the Ahmadiyya community from observing their religious rituals during Eid. The HRCP stated that this action, along with the requirement for Ahmadis to submit affidavits disavowing their beliefs, violates their constitutional rights to freedom of religion and equal citizenship under Article 20. The commission warned that such institutionalized discrimination could embolden vigilante groups and extremist actors to impose a de facto ban on the community’s freedom of movement and public participation. The HRCP called for the LHCBA to withdraw its letter and urged the Punjab government to ensure the protection of the Ahmadiyya community, especially during times when they are vulnerable to vigilantism.
