Hong Kong Opens Universities to More Foreign Students After US Blocks Harvard Admissions

Jarida Report

Hong Kong is expanding its university admissions to accommodate more international students, particularly those affected by the recent U.S. government decision to block Harvard University from enrolling foreign nationals. Education Secretary Christine Choi announced that local universities are encouraged to welcome outstanding students worldwide, utilizing government measures to relax foreign student limits. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has extended offers to international students enrolled at or accepted by Harvard, providing streamlined admissions and academic support to facilitate their transition. This initiative aligns with Hong Kong’s broader strategy to enhance its global education appeal by increasing the non-local student quota from 20% to 40% in its publicly funded universities.
