The not-so-cute bond between Karachi and the Sun
It’s 8 a.m., and the sun has sat high and heavy above Karachi’s sky like a punishment. The rooms feel like an oven — no chilled air from the windows, and the ground is like a frying pan. This heat lasts all day, showing no mercy. From the hot tap water to no drinking water in this weather — nothing is in our favour. The poor are suffering the most.
But suddenly, the stars started disappearing behind the clouds. No breeze. No moon. Just humidity all around the city. The sky cracked open with a flash so sudden that the whole city lit up like a photograph clicked. But wait… is it actually going to happen? My heart skipped a beat. Am I in Karachi?
Then came the thunder — angry, harsh and strong. Screams and laughter left children’s mouths. Half of Karachi was scared, while the other half couldn’t believe what was coming next.
And finally, rain was not a maybe for Karachiites — it was coming. In fact, running towards us. Hugging us like a long-lost friend.
How Karachiites celebrated the rain
From elders to children, everyone was out on the streets to enjoy the first rain. Kids splashed in puddles while the old people enjoyed the moment with a cup of kadak chai.
Some citizens chose to admire this beautiful gift of nature from their balconies, while others blasted old Bollywood songs in their Revo and enjoyed the weather. From Seaview visits to nashta at Boat Basin, everyone was enjoying themselves in their own ways. The whole city came out to celebrate.
Chaos and Karachi — a connection made in heaven
Of course, how can anything happen in Karachi without chaos? The roads were overflooded with rainwater — and gutter water. Traffic got even worse. Despite the electricity outages across the city — who cared? People were too happy to complain.
The transformation was huge. From angry and frustrated faces to happy and grateful — rain brought a great shift in the mood of citizens. It didn’t fix everything, but it gave people a motivation to live life, to be happy in little moments.
Back to reality
The streets have dried. The sun is back now — torching us again! The city has returned to noise and heat. But nothing lasts forever, right?
It was just one rain that we were waiting for — to give us some happiness, to give us a reason to live, to give the rain lovers a reason to live in Karachi.
