Facing Calls to Disarm, Hezbollah Ready to Discuss Weapons if Israel Withdraws: Senior Official

Jarida Report

Hezbollah has expressed a conditional willingness to discuss disarmament with the Lebanese government, contingent upon Israel’s withdrawal from five contested hilltops in southern Lebanon and cessation of its military actions in the region. A senior Hezbollah official indicated readiness to engage in talks with President Joseph Aoun regarding its weapons, provided these conditions are met. This development marks a significant shift, as Hezbollah has historically resisted disarmament, citing its role in defending Lebanon.

President Aoun, who assumed office in January, has been advocating for the establishment of state control over all arms within Lebanon. Hezbollah’s proposal to discuss its weapons in exchange for Israeli withdrawal underscores the complex dynamics of Lebanese sovereignty, regional security concerns, and the influence of external actors.

The context of this development includes Hezbollah’s weakened position following the 2024 conflict with Israel, which resulted in significant casualties and loss of military assets. Additionally, the toppling of its Syrian ally, Bashar al-Assad, further strained Hezbollah’s resources and supply lines.

This initiative occurs amid broader regional tensions, including ongoing conflicts involving Gaza and the complex interplay of various militant groups. The international community continues to monitor these developments, given their potential impact on regional stability and security.
