Experts Warn Internet Users to Stay Vigilant Amid Rising Deepfake Scams

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to increasingly sophisticated scams, including the use of deepfake videos and AI-generated content, making it difficult for individuals to distinguish between real and fake information. In a notable case from February 2024, scammers used AI-generated deepfake videos to impersonate a company’s CEO and other staff during a videoconference, resulting in a $26 million loss for a multinational firm in Hong Kong. Experts warn that AI can exploit previously breached data to create highly personalized scams, automating processes that previously required significant human effort. They advise internet users to exercise increased skepticism, verify information through trusted sources, and implement security measures such as using “safe words” or personal verification methods during sensitive communications to mitigate the risk of falling victim to these advanced scams.
