Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit Russia from May 7 to 10, 2025, at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. The visit coincides with Russia’s 80th Victory Day celebrations on May 9, commemorating the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
During his stay, Xi will participate in the Victory Day Parade and engage in discussions with Putin to enhance the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia. The leaders are expected to sign several bilateral agreements and address current international and regional issues .
This marks Xi’s third visit to Russia since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Despite China’s official stance of neutrality, it has supported Russia’s narrative of Western provocation and continues to supply essential components for Russia’s weapons manufacturing .
The visit occurs amid heightened tensions due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. President Putin has proposed a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10 to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed skepticism, calling for a longer, 30-day ceasefire and warning foreign dignitaries of potential security risks during the celebrations .
Xi’s visit underscores the deepening ties between China and Russia, as both nations seek to strengthen their strategic alignment amid global geopolitical shifts.
