California Sues U.S. Government Over Trump Tariffs in Major Legal Challenge

Jarida Report

California has initiated a lawsuit against the U.S. federal government, challenging President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of tariffs. Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta argue that these tariffs, some reaching up to 145%, are unconstitutional and exceed presidential authority. They contend that only Congress has the power to impose such trade measures.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, seeks to halt the enforcement of these tariffs, which have disrupted global markets and could significantly impact California’s economy. As the fifth-largest economy globally, California faces potential losses in revenue and trade, particularly affecting its agricultural and technology sectors.

Governor Newsom criticized the tariffs as detrimental to everyday Americans and indicative of economic mismanagement. The Trump administration, however, defends the tariffs as necessary to address trade imbalances and has dismissed the lawsuit as a political distraction.
