On June 1, 2025, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court reinstated the political registration of Jamaat-i-Islami, allowing the Islamist party to participate in elections after more than a decade of exclusion. The court directed the Election Commission to process the party’s registration in accordance with the law. This decision follows the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 and the subsequent appeal by Jamaat-i-Islami to review the 2013 High Court order that had banned it. The restoration is seen as a move towards fostering a more democratic and inclusive political environment in the country.
