Hundreds of people staged a rare protest in Delhi on Sunday against worsening air pollution, as air quality continues to deteriorate in India's capital and nearby regions. Over the past three weeks, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI), which measures the level of PM 2.5 or fine particulate matter in the air that can clog lungs, has hovered between 300 and 400, which is 20 to 30 times higher than the World Health Organization's safe limit. The protesters held banners and shouted slogans, demanding that the government take action to curb pollution. Around 80 of them were briefly detained near India Gate after police said they did not have permission to gather at the landmark. (BBC)

Security forces on Monday thwarted a terrorist attack on Cadet College Wana, reportedly carried out by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), security sources said. “A suicide bomber detonated explosives at the main gate of the college, injuring six civilians,” security sources added in a statement. “Swift action by security personnel prevented the attackers from breaching the premises.” It added that a clearance operation was underway, with initial reports indicating that four to five terrorists have been killed. China has lifted export controls on computer chips vital to car production, the country's commerce ministry said on Sunday. Exemptions have been granted to exports made by Chinese-owned Nexperia for civilian use, it said, which should help carmakers who had feared production in Europe would be hit. At the same time, China has also paused an export ban to the US of some materials that are crucial in the semiconductor industry. The announcement marks an easing of trade tensions between Beijing and Washington after President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump agreed in October to reduce tariffs on each other and pause other measures for a year. EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic announced in a post on X that China had agreed to "the further simplification of export procedures for Nexperia chips" and it would "grant exemption from licensing requirements to any exporter" provided the goods were for "civilian use". The White House said nearly 15,000 trucks carrying commercial goods and humanitarian aid have entered Gaza since October 10, following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but Palestinians and aid groups have sharply disputed the figures, Al Jazeera reported on Monday. The Punjab police have registered 51 new cases against environmental violators as part of their ongoing campaign to control smog and reduce air pollution across the province, a spokesperson said on Saturday. The crackdown, which spanned Lahore and other districts over the last 24 hours, led to the arrest of the violators and resulted in fines totaling over Rs1.067 million imposed on 491 people. An additional 38 individuals were issued warnings for environmental violations. According to the breakdown provided by the spokesperson, the operations targe­ted key sources of pollution. A total of 209 smoke-emitting vehicles were cited, alon­gside 101 incidents of crop residue burning and 7 violations related to brick kilns. This recent enforcement action is part of a larger, year-long initiative. (DAWN)

Nine people were killed in firing incidents, and two others were abducted in the districts of Kalat, Nasirabad, and Jhal Magsi in Balochistan on Saturday. In Kalat district’s Khaliqabad area, four people, including tribal leader Shakir Saadullah Langove and his brother Shakir Khairullah Langove, were gunned down when unidentified assailants opened fire in the Sarbund area. The attackers fled the scene after the assault, and authorities have launched an investigation. In another firing incident, two persons were killed in the Shpistan area of Panjgur. Police said that unknown armed men riding a motorbike opened fire and killed the two individuals, who were identified as Muhammad Zafar and Muhammad Naeem. Their bodies were shifted to the district hospital. The cause of the killings is not known so far. In Dera Murad Jamali, two excavator drivers working for a construction company were abducted at gunpoint by unidentified armed men near the Notal police station area of Nasirabad district. The victims, Aashiq Ali Mohammad Hasni and Shakeel Ahmed Korai, were kidnapped near Rabi Canal Sufi Wah, while their machinery was left behind. Police and security forces have launched a search operation to recover them. (DAWN)

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that Pakistan seeks peace but will never allow anyone to challenge its sovereignty or undermine its territorial integrity.
