At Least 51 Killed as Bus Plunges Into Ravine in Guatemala

Jarida Report

On February 10, 2025, a tragic accident occurred in Guatemala City when a bus carrying over 70 passengers lost control, collided with several small vehicles, and plunged approximately 20 meters off a bridge into a sewage-contaminated ravine. Rescue teams recovered 51 bodies from the site, making it one of the most severe road accidents in Latin America in recent years. An additional 10 individuals were extricated with injuries. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo expressed deep sorrow over the incident and declared a period of national mourning. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 30-year-old bus had a valid operating license, but authorities are examining factors such as potential overloading and mechanical failures as possible causes of the accident.
