Car blast kills 10 people minimum in Delhi

Hundreds of people staged a rare protest in Delhi on Sunday against worsening air pollution, as air quality continues to deteriorate in India's capital and nearby regions. Over the past three weeks, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI), which measures the level of PM 2.5 or fine particulate matter in the air that can clog lungs, has hovered between 300 and 400, which is 20 to 30 times higher than the World Health Organization's safe limit. The protesters held banners and shouted slogans, demanding that the government take action to curb pollution. Around 80 of them were briefly detained near India Gate after police said they did not have permission to gather at the landmark. (BBC)

Security forces on Monday thwarted a terrorist attack on Cadet College Wana, reportedly carried out by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), security sources said. “A suicide bomber detonated explosives at the main gate of the college, injuring six civilians,” security sources added in a statement. “Swift action by security personnel prevented the attackers from breaching the premises.” It added that a clearance operation was underway, with initial reports indicating that four to five terrorists have been killed. It added that the attackers attempted to replicate an incident similar to the 2014 Army Public School tragedy but were successfully neutralised before they could inflict large-scale damage. (DAWN)

China has lifted export controls on computer chips vital to car production, the country's commerce ministry said on Sunday. Exemptions have been granted to exports made by Chinese-owned Nexperia for civilian use, it said, which should help carmakers who had feared production in Europe would be hit. At the same time, China has also paused an export ban to the US of some materials that are crucial in the semiconductor industry. The announcement marks an easing of trade tensions between Beijing and Washington after President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump agreed in October to reduce tariffs on each other and pause other measures for a year. EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic announced in a post on X that China had agreed to "the further simplification of export procedures for Nexperia chips" and it would "grant exemption from licensing requirements to any exporter" provided the goods were for "civilian use". A weakened Typhoon Fung-wong is now passing over the South China Sea and expected to head to Taiwan, after leaving two people dead in the Philippines. Some 1.4 million in the Philippines had been preemptively evacuated before Fung-wong made landfall on Sunday as a super typhoon, carrying winds of 185km/h (115mph) and gusts of 230km/h (143mph). It hit Aurora province in Luzon - the country's most populous island - at 21:10 local time (13:10 GMT) and weakened to a typhoon hours later. Fung-wong comes days after earlier storm Kalmaegi left nearly 200 people dead. Philippine authorities are reporting less severe damage than expected - though a number of communities are still cut off by the floods. (BBC)
