Afghanistan Warns of Regional Fallout from Escalating Pakistan-India Tensions

Jarida Report

Afghanistan has voiced concerns over the escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, warning of potential negative impacts on Kabul and the broader region. Following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities, India suggested cross-border involvement without presenting evidence. Pakistan refuted these claims and called for an impartial investigation.

In retaliation, Pakistan implemented measures including halting border trade, closing its airspace and ports to Indian carriers, and expelling Indian diplomats. These actions have disrupted trade routes, notably affecting Afghan traders who rely on the Attari-Wagah border crossing. Despite Pakistan allowing 150 stranded Afghan trucks to proceed, India has not permitted their entry, leaving the goods in limbo.

Hekmatullah Zaland, Deputy Director of Afghanistan’s Centre for Strategic Studies, emphasized the potential direct negative impact of these tensions on Afghanistan. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced policy and engaging with both neighboring countries to mitigate risks. The Afghan government is preparing for potential incidents and seeking peaceful resolutions to prevent further economic and regional instability.
