Miftah Ismail Criticizes Government Over High Electricity and Sugar Prices

Jarida Report

Former finance minister Miftah Ismail criticized the federal government for permitting sugar exports six months ago, leading to domestic price hikes from Rs115 to Rs175 per kilogram. He questioned the influence behind this decision, recalling past criticisms of similar actions. Ismail also highlighted that Pakistan’s electricity prices surpass those in neighboring countries, attributing this to unsuccessful policies and frequent policy reversals.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar recently stated that retail sugar prices should not exceed Rs164 per kilogram, following warnings from the Competition Commission of Pakistan against price manipulation by sugar mills.
