France Deploys 70,000 Police Officers Ahead of Nationwide Halloween Protests

Jarida Report

France is deploying 70,000 police officers across the country on Saturday as authorities prepare for nationwide demonstrations over rising living costs, public services and dissatisfaction with President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

The protests, coinciding with Halloween, come two weeks after riots and looting erupted in several French cities, leaving shops, businesses and public buildings damaged and catching security forces off guard.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has pledged a firm response to any renewed violence, describing the planned demonstrations as presenting “a very high risk” of unrest.

“Everyone is on deck to ensure an extremely firm response to any trouble,” Nunez told a news conference earlier this week while outlining the government’s security arrangements.

Authorities are particularly concerned that individuals involved in violence could exploit Halloween celebrations by wearing masks to conceal their identities.

Nunez noted that existing French laws allow police to prohibit face coverings when public order is threatened.

The heightened security measures reflect concerns about a repeat of the destruction witnessed during the previous demonstrations, when rioting and looting caused extensive damage in several cities.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy has advised travellers to avoid areas where demonstrations or large public gatherings are expected.

The nationwide protests are being driven by public frustration over the cost of living, the condition of public services and the policies of Macron’s administration.

French authorities are preparing for significant gatherings throughout Saturday, with police deployed to maintain public order and prevent further violence.
