Up To 500 French Schools Face Partial Or Full Closures Amid Protests

Jarida Report

PARIS: Up to 500 schools across France will be fully or partially closed on Monday as protests by teenage students continue to disrupt schools, Education Minister Edouard Geffray said on Sunday.

Geffray said lessons would be “totally or partly suspended” at around 400 to 500 high schools because security conditions “have not been fulfilled”.

He added that 24 schools had been “burned or ransacked” since the protests began.

The student-led demonstrations have focused on concerns including teacher shortages, long school days, deteriorating facilities and other grievances affecting education.

Geffray said the number of affected schools on Monday would be similar to Friday’s figure, while promising a “partial, progressive return to lessons”.
