Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States reduces military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Tuesday.
The official said Washington would first need to formally signal its willingness to resolve the dispute through diplomacy and agree on a timetable for negotiations.
“The US needs to announce that it wants to resolve the issue diplomatically, make that official, and then agree on a timeline for how the process will move forward,” the official said.
According to the official, Iran’s delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York has full authority to pursue renewed diplomatic engagement with Washington.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed Tehran for New York on Tuesday morning. However, the official said Pezeshkian would not meet US President Donald Trump at UN headquarters.
The official said details of a possible agreement to end hostilities between Tehran and Washington could instead be discussed in New York through mediators. Iran’s proposal was conveyed to the United States through intermediaries on September 16, according to the official.
“The UN General Assembly is a golden opportunity for the US to return to diplomacy,” the official said, adding that Tehran would welcome renewed negotiations if Washington took tangible steps.
The comments follow a warning from Iran’s military central command on Sunday that it had received information suggesting the United States was preparing to resume military operations with support from countries in the region. It warned that any such action would prompt Iranian retaliation “without limitations and considerations.”
