Pakistani singer and actor Umair Jaswal has announced the death of his father, Tariq Majeed, paying tribute to his decades-long contribution to Pakistan’s oil and gas exploration sector.
Jaswal shared the news on Instagram alongside a photograph of his father. In the caption, he wrote: “Be shaak hum Allah hee ke hain aur humein ussi ki taraaf laut ke jaana hai” — an expression of the Quranic verse meaning, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.”
In subsequent slides, Jaswal reflected on his father’s professional legacy as a senior exploration leader at the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and later at Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL).
He said his father helped oversee some of Pakistan’s most productive years of indigenous oil and gas exploration. Between fiscal years 2006-07 and 2010-11, OGDCL drilled 149 wells and recorded 25 oil, gas and condensate discoveries, including what was then a record 10 discoveries in a single year.
Jaswal said that during 2009-10 alone, discoveries added approximately 14.07 million barrels of oil and 161.10 billion cubic feet of gas to OGDCL’s reserves.
He also highlighted his father’s later tenure at POL, which was associated with significant discoveries including Jhandial-1, described by the company as the largest oil and gas discovery in Punjab.
Beyond his exploration work, Tariq Majeed was an internationally published petroleum geoscientist. Jaswal said his research on Pakistan’s hydrocarbon systems appeared in scientific publications and forums including the AAPG Bulletin, with his work also associated with the Geological Society of America, Geologische Rundschau, Marine and Petroleum Geology and international geoscience conferences.
“He left behind not only a record of exploration success, but a living geological roadmap for Pakistan’s next generation of discoveries,” Jaswal wrote.
Concluding his tribute, he prayed: “May Allah accept his knowledge, service, and contribution as Sadaqah-e-Jariyah and grant him the highest ranks in Jannat-ul-Firdous. Ameen.”
Jaswal’s announcement drew numerous messages of condolence from followers and members of the public.
