Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25, Beijing confirmed on Monday, as the world’s two largest economies seek to manage differences over trade, technology and strategic issues.
China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would visit the US at the invitation of President Donald Trump, without providing further details.
The trip will mark Xi’s first state visit to the United States since September 2015, when he travelled to Washington at the invitation of then-President Barack Obama. He later met Trump in 2017 during Trump’s first term and visited the US again in 2023 for talks with then-President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Xi has visited the United States five times since becoming China’s president in 2013. His upcoming trip follows Trump’s state visit to China in May, with Beijing describing the exchange of visits by the two leaders within six months as having “historic significance”.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Xi and Trump would hold an “in-depth exchange of views” on bilateral relations as well as issues concerning peace and development.
Guo said Beijing would work with Washington to strengthen dialogue, expand cooperation and manage differences, while contributing to global peace, stability and prosperity.
US media reports said Xi is expected to be received by Trump at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Senior Chinese business executives, including representatives of electric vehicle maker BYD and smart manufacturing company Xiaomi, are also expected to accompany him.
Xi has repeatedly stressed the importance of stable China-US relations. During a phone call with Trump in June 2025, he said both sides needed to ensure the relationship remained on a steady course.
The upcoming summit comes as Washington and Beijing seek to ease tensions over trade, technology and other strategic matters.
