World leaders will gather at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday for the opening of the high-level General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly, with this year’s discussions centred on rebuilding international trust amid major global challenges.
The official theme of the gathering is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
Heads of state and government are expected to address a range of international security, geopolitical and economic issues during the high-level proceedings.
Following a longstanding UN diplomatic tradition, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to deliver the first national address in the General Assembly Hall. He will be followed by the leader of the host country, US President Donald Trump.
The opening morning will also feature speeches by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.
Later speakers are scheduled to include Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori, Chilean President José Antonio Kast, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Guillaume and Angolan President João Lourenço.
The 81st session of the General Assembly formally opened on September 8, while the General Debate begins on Tuesday.
High-level addresses will continue through September 26, with the remaining speeches scheduled to conclude on September 28.
